The Charlotte-Metrolina section of the Society of Women Engineers is open to all! We want to meet you and give you the opportunity to join our monthly events, get connected to other professionals, sharpen your engineering skillset, and get involved in your community! Our members come from the City of Charlotte and the surrounding areas, including parts of South Carolina.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950, is a not-for-profit educational and service organization. SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and is recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders.

The SWE-CM Vision:

The Society of Women Engineers Charlotte-Metrolina Section strives to be a viable support network for female engineers in the Charlotte-Metrolina area, to be visible in our community through outreach activities and corporate relations, and to be a building block for SWE’s Southeast Region.

We received our reinstatement charter on August 28, 1999. Our geographical boundaries include North Carolina zip codes 280-282 and South Carolina 297. We currently have over 100 paid members.

The Power of Diversity

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is the driving force that establishes engineering and technology as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. Founded in 1950, SWE is a not-for-profit educational and service organization with 300 collegiate and 100 professional sections nationwide, as well as members-at-large. It empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and be recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders

The SWE Mission (Adopted in 1986)

Stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, demonstrate the value of diversity.

Education and Outreach
The technical professions will benefit, and the quality of life will be enhanced by more women of all backgrounds pursuing the profession of engineering.

Inclusive Organization
SWE will be an inclusive organization focused on issues of interest to women of all backgrounds in engineering and technical careers.

Knowledge Source
SWE will be a worldwide leader and preferred partner in the creation and advancement of information about women in technical careers.

Professional Leadership
Women will be acknowledged as demonstrating the skills required to be effective leaders in a global marketplace.

Value and Benefit
SWE programs and services across the organization will provide value and benefit and meet the diverse and changing needs of Society members and stakeholders.

Original Charter – May 1982

Charlotte-Metrolina Section was granted its original charter on May 2, 1982, with the geographical boundaries of North Carolina zip codes 280-282 and 286-288. North Carolina zip code 289 was added October 1-3, 1982. The Section was active for approximately six years before being declared inactive by the Society Board of Directors on May 13, 1989.

Reinstatement Charter – August 1999

Charlotte-Metrolina Section was granted its reinstatement charter on August 28, 1999, with our current geographical boundaries of North Carolina zip codes 280-282 and South Carolina zip code 297.

The information concerning this timeframe came from correspondence and files that were passed on by the Section President during the reinstatement process.
